Moscow and the Moscow RegionForensic and pre-litigation examinations

Typical scenario

Documents disappear from a laptop after folder synchronisation

Missing local files do not by themselves explain why a synced folder changed. A typical examination tests cloud-account deletion, selective sync settings and local actions against the surviving device records.

What needs to be clarified

Build an evidence-supported timeline for the folder, compare local and supplied cloud logs, and assess recovery options without altering original media.

Materials to prepare

  • Laptop or verified disk image with acquisition record and hashes
  • Cloud audit export and time-zone information
  • Sync settings, missing-file list and available backups

What to compare

Use a working copy, recording hashes and tool versions. Examine client logs, file-system records, recycle bins and available document versions. Normalise timestamps with stated assumptions; correlate devices by identifiers, identifying logging gaps and effects of subsequent use.

Possible outcome of the analysis

A timeline, found or recovered-file inventory and supported technical explanations may result. A recorded account login is not treated as identification of a particular person.

Limits of the conclusions

Continued use and automatic cleanup may destroy traces. Local logs do not cover all cloud history; attributing human actions needs evidence beyond an account entry.
