Typical scenario

A date inside a ZIP was treated as the document’s creation time

If a document in a ZIP appears to predate the archive’s dispatch, someone may treat this as evidence of backdating. In this hypothetical situation, dates displayed by the archiver and the extracted file’s properties are compared across different time zones without checking which fields represent creation or modification.

What needs to be clarified

Examine the origin of timestamps inside the archive and after extraction, identify comparable values, and assess supported events while preserving the original ZIP and files unchanged.

Materials to prepare

  • Original ZIP and extracted files with checksums
  • Archiver and operating system versions and extraction time zone settings
  • Original report with property screenshots and the fields being compared

What to compare

On a verified copy, read timestamps separately from local headers, the central directory and available ZIP extensions. Compare them with filesystem timestamps after controlled extraction, recording software and settings. Account for local time, storage precision and rounding; verify matching content separately from matching displayed dates.

Possible outcome of the analysis

Possible results include a timestamp provenance table and reproducible extraction test; the chronology may be clarified or remain ambiguous if a required field or original time zone is unavailable.

Limits of the conclusions

A modification field does not prove when text was written or who wrote it. Extraction can create new system timestamps; inconsistent dates alone do not establish forgery.
